Ranges, oaks, and baseheaters all can burn coal some base heaters can burn wood as well, most coal stoves can burn wood but wood stoves can not burn coal.
many people have a misconception that coal is dirty and bad for the environment, when in reality once learned coal can be clean and neat also coal will give extended burn times when heating a house for long periods of time. coal is actually more environmentally friendly, wood stoves are required now by the EPA to have after burners and Catalytic converter‘s to burn off the excess smoke and gasses, coal stoves are still un regulated due to their efficiency and lack of pollutants.
If wood is abundant, you can get it cheap or have your own wood lot, maybe wood is a better fit for you.
at $5.00 a gallon for oil or $300-400 a chord for wood coal maybe a alternative, it comes in bags on a pallet, and has much much more btu’s than either and will make these old stoves burn for 12+ hours at a time, there is a learning curve but it’s well worth it in the long run. just something to consider when buying a stove.
